What is a Time Duration Calculator?
A time duration calculator computes the exact difference between two points in time — returning the result broken down into years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. It's useful for project timelines, contract durations, loan tenures, event countdowns, and deadline tracking.
Beyond calendar days, this calculator also counts business days (excluding weekends), making it practical for work and legal contexts where only working days matter.
lightbulb Example Calculation
Scenario: Ms. Nalini Rajan, HR Manager at Infosys — calculating Mr. Arun's exact service period for gratuity eligibility: Joining date 1 January 2018, Last working day 20 May 2026 (needs years, months, days, and business days count)
1Total days = 3,062 days (8 yrs 4 mo 19 days)
2Total hours = 3,062 × 24 = 73,488 hours
3Business days ≈ 2,187 (excluding weekends)
✓ Result: 8 yrs 4 mo 19 days | 3,062 calendar days
help_outlineHow to Use the Time Duration Calculator
- Select the Start Date & Time using the datetime picker — click the field and use the calendar/clock interface, or type directly.
- Select the End Date & Time — this can be in the past (to measure elapsed time) or the future (to count down to a deadline).
- Results update live as you change either date — the exact interval in years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds is shown instantly.
- Review total calendar days, total hours, total minutes, and total seconds for precise measurement in each unit.
- Use the Business Days count (Mon–Fri only, excluding weekends) for project deadlines, notice periods, and legal timelines where only working days count.

quizFrequently Asked Questions
How is the business days count calculated?
Business days are counted by including only Monday through Friday within the date range — Saturdays and Sundays are excluded. Public holidays are NOT automatically excluded because they vary by state, company, and year (national holidays like Republic Day vs regional ones like Pongal). Manually subtract your holidays from the business day count when needed. For contracts and legal documents, "business days" typically also excludes bank holidays — verify the exact definition in your specific agreement.
How do I use this calculator to verify gratuity eligibility?
Gratuity under the Payment of Gratuity Act 1972 requires a minimum service period of 5 years. Enter your joining date and last working date to get the exact service period in years, months, and days. Note: courts have consistently held that "5 years of continuous service" is met if the employee has worked 4 years and 240 days (the 5th year is considered complete). This calculator shows the exact breakdown, helping HR and employees determine eligibility precisely — especially when near the 5-year boundary.
How do I calculate my notice period's last working day?
Enter your resignation submission date as Start and add your notice period length as the End (mentally or using a calendar). The calculator shows the calendar days — verify the result matches your contractual notice requirement. For a 90-calendar-day notice: resignation on 1 March → last working day on 30 May. Verify whether your employment contract specifies "calendar days" (common) or "working days" — if working days, use the business days count instead, which would push the end date further.
How do I count remaining days until a project deadline?
Enter today's date and time as Start, and the deadline date as End. The calculator shows calendar days remaining, business days remaining, and the precise time breakdown. For sprint planning, use the business days count — a 10-business-day sprint from Monday spans exactly 2 calendar weeks (14 days). For SLA (Service Level Agreement) tracking, verify whether the SLA specifies calendar hours, business hours, or business days — the calculator provides all three unit types for flexibility.
Does the calculator handle leap years and different month lengths correctly?
Yes. The calendar-day count is precise — it correctly accounts for months with different lengths (January=31, February=28/29, etc.) and leap years (February 29 is counted as a calendar day when it falls in the range). The year and month breakdown also correctly handles partial months and year boundaries. For business day counts across very long periods (10+ years), leap year handling is applied throughout the calculation, ensuring accuracy for multi-year spans like employment tenure or long-term project durations.
