What is an Attendance Calculator?

Most colleges and universities in India require a minimum attendance of 75% to be eligible for exams. Falling short can result in being barred from sitting for semester exams, making it crucial for students to track their attendance regularly.

This calculator tells you your current attendance percentage, how many more classes you can miss while staying above your target, or how many consecutive classes you need to attend to reach the required threshold.

lightbulb Example Calculation
Scenario: Rahul, B.Tech 3rd year student at Anna University — 75 classes held so far, attended 58. His professor warned he needs minimum 75% to sit for exams (5 more classes remaining this month)
1Current % = (75 / 100) × 100 = 75.0%
2You're exactly at 75% — right at the boundary
3Missing 1 more class drops you to 74 / 101 = 73.3%
✓ You can miss 0 classes — attend all remaining

help_outlineHow to Use the Attendance Calculator

  1. Enter the Total Classes Held so far this semester — the number of classes that have been conducted, whether you attended or not.
  2. Enter the number of Classes Attended — only the classes where you were physically present and marked present.
  3. Select your college's Required Attendance % from the dropdown — 75% (most common for Indian colleges), 80%, or 85%.
  4. Results update live as you type — your current percentage and advisory are shown immediately.
  5. Use the advisory panel and progress bar to plan your attendance for the remaining semester strategically.

Benefits

  • Know exactly how many more classes you can afford to skip without risking exam debarment
  • If below threshold, get the exact number of consecutive classes you must attend to recover
  • Visual progress bar shows at a glance how far you are from the required percentage
  • Supports 75%, 80%, and 85% thresholds — covers most Indian universities and professional courses
  • Plan leaves strategically — avoid unplanned absences by tracking the buffer in real time

Key Terms

Attendance %
(Classes Attended / Total Classes Held) × 100; must typically be ≥75% for exam eligibility in Indian colleges
Debarment
University penalty for falling below minimum attendance — student is barred from appearing in semester exams
Condonation
Discretionary attendance relaxation (65–74%) granted by some universities on medical or genuine grounds; not automatic
Duty Leave
Officially excused absences for NCC, NSS, sports representation, or college events — does not count against attendance
Proxy Attendance
Marking absent students present — prohibited and punishable under university disciplinary rules

quizFrequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum attendance required in Indian colleges?
UGC and AICTE regulations mandate a minimum of 75% attendance for eligibility to appear in semester examinations. Medical and engineering colleges affiliated with state universities may require 80–85%. IITs enforce 75% per subject. Some universities permit condonation (relaxation) for students with 65–74% who provide valid medical certificates, but this is discretionary and not guaranteed — plan as if 75% is the hard floor.
How many classes can I miss if my current attendance is exactly 75%?
Zero. If you are at exactly 75% (e.g., attended 75 of 100 classes), missing even one more drops you to 75/101 = 74.3%, below the threshold. The formula for classes you can miss (n): n ≤ (Attended / Required%) − Total. At 75% exactly, this gives 0. Once more classes are added to the total without you attending, you need to attend extras just to hold the line.
How many consecutive classes must I attend to recover if I'm below 75%?
Solve: (Attended + n) / (Total + n) ≥ 0.75, which gives n ≥ (0.75 × Total − Attended) / 0.25. Example: attended 55 of 100 classes — n ≥ (75 − 55) / 0.25 = 80 more consecutive classes. This can seem impossible late in the semester, which is why tracking early matters. This calculator does this computation automatically.
Does medical leave automatically protect my attendance?
Not automatically. Medical leave reduces your attendance unless the college formally excuses those specific classes. You must submit a medical certificate within the time window specified by your institution (usually 3–7 days of return). Duty leaves (NCC/NSS/sports events with official college permission) are typically excused. Verbal assurances from teachers rarely hold up at the end-of-semester attendance review — always get written approval.
Are back-paper students subject to the same 75% rule?
Yes. Back papers (arrear exams from previous semesters) and current semester attendance are tracked independently. Even if you have pending arrears, your current semester attendance must still meet 75% for you to appear in current semester exams. Missing the threshold means both current papers and potentially rescheduled arrear exams are at risk. Some universities calculate attendance per subject, not per semester — check your specific institution's rules.
