Income Tax for Married Couples in India
India does not have joint filing for married couples — each spouse files separately. This is often advantageous compared to countries with joint filing, as income is taxed individually, avoiding the "marriage penalty" seen in the US tax code. However, having one high earner and one low earner does mean the higher earner faces higher slab rates.
The hypothetical joint figure shows what tax would be due if both incomes were combined under one filer (which is not currently permitted in India). This illustrates the benefit of income splitting between spouses.
lightbulb Example
₹12L + ₹8L income, New Regime:
1Spouse 1 tax ≈ ₹83,200 (after std ded.)
2Spouse 2 tax ≈ ₹ nil (income ≤7L after ded.)
✓ Filing separately is always better in India
