- Direct percentage: Some universities accept a percentage equivalent. A 10-point CGPA of 8.5 on the VTU scale = 85%, which is typically equivalent to a US GPA of 3.6–3.7.
- University-specific: Some universities have their own conversion tables for Indian transcripts. Check the admissions page for your target university.
Common Mistakes
- Using CBSE formula for engineering CGPA: The CBSE × 9.5 formula is for Class X only. Using it for a VTU or AKTU CGPA will give incorrect results.
- Confusing SGPA with CGPA: SGPA is for a single semester; CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters. Placement criteria always refer to CGPA.
- Ignoring credit weighting: In credit-based systems, a high SGPA in a semester with fewer credits has less impact on CGPA than one with more credits.
- Rounding prematurely: Keep at least two decimal places when converting. Rounding 7.49 to 7.5 can mean the difference between meeting a 75% cut-off or not.
